I've been an avid linguist for many years before turning my attention to computer languages. Morphemes, inflection, grammar and syntax have always fascinated me. If you change this here, the meaning of that over there changes. Change the word, change the world. For me ruby and javascript were natural progressions in this fascination.
What excites me most about web development is creating web applications that help users control and automatize tedious and rote processes. How should I prioritize the things that I have to do? What should the start date for a project be? How do I keep track of time for 20 test-takers who started at different times and have different test times? I like solving these kinds of problems with smart apps that display the needed information elegantly.
Speaking of the elegant display of information: I am absolutely obsessed with data visualization and its organization into dashboards. I love to think about how I can make statistics sexy.
